Distinguish the patterns
Asthma involves inflamed, narrowed bronchi/bronchioles and wheezing. Emphysema damages alveolar walls and reduces exchange area, often with air trapping. Silicosis and asbestosis are occupational lung diseases; chronic exposure can cause fibrosis.
Recognise hypoxia
Hypoxia is inadequate oxygen supply to tissues. Carbon monoxide binds haemoglobin strongly and can cause severe, potentially fatal hypoxia.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Asthma: narrowed inflamed airways.
- ✓Emphysema: damaged alveoli and lower exchange area.
- ✓Silicosis/asbestosis: occupational exposure.
- ✓CO poisoning can produce severe hypoxia.
OlympIQ trap
Asthma primarily narrows airways; emphysema primarily destroys alveolar walls.
