Read Conservation by Where It Happens
Classify conservation by whether organisms remain in their natural ecosystem or are maintained outside it.
Conservation Methods is the central idea in this question pattern. Identify the condition in the stem before applying the method below.
Keep habitats intact
National parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves and sacred groves conserve biodiversity in situ. Sacred groves are often protected through community traditions, not because they are all formally designated parks.
Maintain populations outside their habitat
Seed and gene banks, botanical gardens and zoological collections are ex-situ methods. The sample’s list also counts its wildlife safari park under ex-situ.
Treat protected-area totals as a source snapshot
Question banks sometimes test the figures printed in a particular textbook edition. For this source snapshot, use 3 biodiversity hotspots associated with India, 90 national parks, 14 biosphere reserves, and more than 448 wildlife sanctuaries. These are reference-edition figures, not a substitute for current government statistics.

- ✓In situ: protect populations in their natural habitat.
- ✓Ex situ: maintain material or organisms outside their habitat.
- ✓Sacred groves can be community-protected without being national parks.
The word “protected” does not by itself tell you whether a method is in situ or ex situ.
