AarC links acetate to the TCA cycle

Acetobacter aceti can use an acetate:succinate CoA-transferase (AarC) in place of the usual succinyl-CoA synthetase step. The transferase exchanges CoA between acetate and succinyl-CoA, producing acetyl-CoA and succinate and connecting acetate metabolism with a modified TCA cycle. This explains the acetate-related answer in the linked NSEB question; it is not the ethanol-oxidation reaction that initially produces vinegar.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Identify acetate as the CoA acceptor in the AarC reaction.
Do not confuse the two vinegar steps

Acetate assimilation/oxidation through the modified TCA cycle is distinct from ethanol oxidation to acetic acid during vinegar production.
