Recognise clumped dispersion

Individuals cluster when resources are patchy or organisms aggregate. Mushrooms on one rotting log share a localised resource; synchronously emerging mayflies can form dense swarms. Territorial nesting birds are more evenly spaced, while wind-dispersed plants can be random.

Compare diversity with richness and evenness

Species richness counts species; evenness compares their relative abundances. Two habitats can have the same richness but different diversity when one is dominated by a single species. The more even community has greater diversity.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Patchy resources and aggregation create clumped patterns.
  • ✓Territoriality tends to produce uniform spacing; wind dispersal may produce random spacing.
  • ✓Diversity reflects both richness and evenness.
OlympIQ trap

Do not equate more individuals with greater species richness or diversity.
