Use inherited variation

VNTRs and other noncoding polymorphisms differ among people and are inherited, making multilocus profiles useful for identity and kinship comparisons.

Detect fragments

Restriction fragments are separated by gel electrophoresis, transferred to a membrane by Southern blotting and hybridised with labelled probes. Satellite DNA is highly repetitive, noncoding DNA often concentrated in heterochromatic regions.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓VNTR variation is inherited and person-variable.
  • ✓Southern blot transfers DNA fragments to membrane.
  • ✓Probe hybridisation reveals matching sequences.
OlympIQ trap

A blot is the transfer/detection workflow; restriction digestion and hybridisation are separate steps.
