Read the Kidney from Cortex to Nephron
Connect kidney regions and nephron types to the tissues and vessels that make filtration and concentration possible.
Kidney Structure and Nephrons is the central idea in this question pattern. Identify the condition in the stem before applying the method below.
Orient the kidney
Renal columns are extensions of cortex between medullary pyramids. The nephron begins at Bowman’s capsule; the PCT has cuboidal brush-border epithelium, while Bowman’s capsule and glomerular capillaries have thin squamous barriers. The bladder lining is transitional.
Compare nephron types
Most nephrons are cortical, with shorter loops. Juxtamedullary nephrons have long loops and an associated vasa recta, helping establish and preserve the medullary osmotic gradient.
Read kidney and urinary-system diagrams
Trace urine from the kidney through the ureter to the bladder, then through the urethra. In a sectioned kidney, distinguish the outer cortex, medullary pyramids, renal columns between pyramids, calyces and renal pelvis; trace blood vessels separately from urine flow.
Connect kidney anatomy labels
In a whole urinary-system figure, distinguish the ureter, bladder and urethra from the blood vessels. In a kidney section, identify the outer cortex, medullary pyramids, renal columns between pyramids, calyces and renal pelvis. Follow urine flow separately from blood flow.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Columns of Bertini = cortex extending between pyramids.
- ✓PCT: simple cuboidal brush border; bladder: transitional.
- ✓Juxtamedullary nephron: long loop + vasa recta.
Do not confuse renal columns with medullary pyramids.
