Read Meristems from Origin to Tissue
Plant growth depends on meristems and on cells that can regain or specialise their developmental capacity.
Living-system questions are solved by matching a structure or organism to its function, process and stated condition.
Locate the meristems
Apical and intercalary meristems are primary. Fascicular and interfascicular cambia form a vascular cambium cylinder; cork cambium is another lateral meristem. Pericycle can produce lateral roots and contribute to root cambium.
Distinguish developmental changes
Dedifferentiation restores division ability to mature cells; redifferentiation produces specialised tissues such as secondary xylem/phloem. Parenchyma is the first primary permanent tissue.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Cambial rings are lateral meristems.
- ✓Pericycle gives rise to lateral roots.
- ✓Dedifferentiation regains division; redifferentiation specialises.
- ✓Parenchyma is the first-formed primary permanent tissue.
Do not call every secondary tissue a direct product of dedifferentiation; cambium first forms, then its derivatives redifferentiate.
