Separate the routes
Apospory forms an embryo sac from a diploid somatic ovule cell without meiosis. Parthenogenesis forms an embryo from an unfertilised egg. Both are apomictic routes.
Why breeders value it
Because meiosis and fertilisation are bypassed, progeny can retain the maternal genotype and hybrid traits across generations. Apomixis does not inherently make offspring better than the parent.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Apomixis: seed without fertilisation.
- ✓Apospory: somatic ovule cell forms embryo sac.
- ✓Parthenogenesis: embryo from unfertilised egg.
- ✓Can fix hybrid combinations.
OlympIQ trap
Clonal inheritance preserves a genotype; it does not guarantee improvement.
