Read a Flower from Axis to Symmetry
Flower questions become easier when you locate the floral axis, supporting bracts, symmetry and ovary position separately.
Living-system questions are solved by matching a structure or organism to its function, process and stated condition.
Locate and classify
The thalamus/receptacle is the expanded floral axis; a bract subtends the flower or pedicel. Monoecious plants bear male and female unisexual flowers on one plant; dioecious species separate them between plants.
Read symmetry and insertion
Actinomorphic flowers divide into similar halves in several planes; zygomorphic flowers in one plane; asymmetric flowers in none. A superior ovary is hypogynous; an inferior ovary is epigynous. Apocarpous carpels remain free.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Monoecious = male and female flowers on one individual.
- ✓Actinomorphic: many planes; zygomorphic: one; asymmetric: none.
- ✓Epigynous flower has an inferior ovary.
