Read Linkage Maps and Recombination

Linkage questions ask how often genes travel together; mapping questions use recombinant offspring to estimate gene order and distance.

Linkage and Gene Mapping is the central idea in this question pattern. Identify the condition in the stem before applying the method below.

Separate linkage from recombination

Genes on the same chromosome are physically linked. Linked genes tend to pass together, so parental allele combinations are more common than non-parental (recombinant) combinations. Crossing over can make recombinants. Tighter linkage means a lower recombination frequency; genes farther apart generally have more opportunity for crossing over.

Turn recombination into map distance

For short intervals, recombination percentage estimates distance: 1% recombination is approximately 1 map unit (centimorgan). Use recombination—not mutation—frequency to make a genetic map.

Add adjacent intervals when testing an order: if A–
B = 5 and B–D = 15, then A–D = 20 map units when B lies between A and D

Solve gene-order questions systematically

Write each measured pair and distance, then try each proposed order. For genes in a line, the distance between non-adjacent genes is the sum of the intervening intervals. Check every supplied pair, not just the largest value. A reverse order describes the same map; if the question accepts more than one orientation, report the equivalent order(s).

Read the 50% limit and Morgan clue

Recombination frequency cannot exceed 50%. At 50%, parental and recombinant classes occur equally often, so loci appear to assort independently even if they lie on the same chromosome far apart. Morgan's inheritance experiments used Drosophila melanogaster; they revealed linkage, while Sturtevant used recombination frequency to map gene positions.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Parental combinations more frequent than recombinants → linkage is present.
  • ✓Closer genes generally show lower recombination; greater recombination means greater map distance for short intervals.
  • ✓1% recombination ≈ 1 cM for a short interval; mutation frequency is not the mapping measure here.
  • ✓Add adjacent intervals and verify all pairwise distances for each candidate gene order.
  • ✓50% is the maximum recombination frequency; at this value genes appear independently assorted.
  • ✓Morgan used Drosophila melanogaster; Sturtevant developed linkage maps from recombination data.
OlympIQ trap

Do not call every recombinant frequency a direct physical distance: it is an estimate, especially useful for short intervals. Never accept a proposed order until every listed pairwise distance fits.
