Core idea

Telomerase extends chromosome ends using its built-in RNA template. Activity is high in many germ cells, embryonic stem cells and cancer cells, but is low or absent in most differentiated somatic cells. When comparing cell types, mature adipocytes are expected to show less telomerase than proliferative or self-renewing populations.

Low telomerase in mature adipocytes

Mature differentiated somatic cells such as adipocytes generally have little or no telomerase, unlike germ, stem and cancer cells.
