Classify leaf form and arrangement
A simple leaf has one undivided blade; a pinnately compound leaf bears leaflets along a rachis (Neem). Mustard and sunflower are alternate; guava and Calotropis are opposite. New leaves form from shoot apical meristems in an acropetal sequence.
Recognise a phyllode
In Acacia, a flattened petiole called a phyllode becomes photosynthetic. It is a petiole modification, not a leaf blade.
