Temperature and Metabolism

Respiration responds differently to ambient temperature. An ectotherm shows strong dependence of metabolic/respiratory rate on environmental temperature, whereas an endotherm regulates internal temperature and shows a different relationship. In the graph, curve I is consistent with an ectothermic fish and curve II with an endothermic mammal. Thus Mackerel fish - Kangaroo is the appropriate pairing.

Brown-fat thermogenesis

Brown-adipose UCP₁ lets protons return across the inner mitochondrial membrane without ATP synthesis. The energy is released as heat through non-shivering thermogenesis; it is not a shivering mechanism.

Link water oxygen to ectotherm demand

As water warms, dissolved oxygen falls. Fish are ectotherms, so both resting and active oxygen consumption rise with temperature; active fish remain above resting fish at each temperature. Select the graph with falling water oxygen, two rising fish-demand curves, and the active curve higher than the resting curve. Choose D.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Respiration responds differently to ambient temperature
  • ✓Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen while ectotherm oxygen demand rises with temperature.
Keep the pattern precise
