Match tissue to role
The myocardium is the contractile middle layer and is thickest in the left ventricle. Papillary muscles anchor chordae tendineae and help prevent AV-valve inversion. The AV septum is fibrous tissue separating atrial and ventricular muscle.
Recognise cardiac muscle
Cardiac muscle is striated, branched and rhythmic, with high resistance to fatigue. The Bundle of His is specialised cardiac muscle tissue, not a nerve.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Myocardium thickness tracks workload.
- ✓Papillary muscles + chordae support AV valves.
- ✓Bundle of His is cardiac muscle tissue.
- ✓Cardiac muscle contracts rhythmically and resists fatigue.
OlympIQ trap
Do not call conducting cardiac tissue nervous tissue.
