Recognise the fungal body

Fungi are heterotrophic, including saprotrophic and parasitic forms. Thread-like hyphae form the mycelium, and glycogen is a common storage product. Coenocytic hyphae lack septa and have continuous multinucleate cytoplasm.

Compare the major groups

Ascomycetes produce ascospores inside asci; basidiomycetes produce basidiospores on basidia. Penicillium is an ascomycete used in cheese ripening. Check both the structure and reproductive mode before selecting a match.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Hyphae form mycelium; glycogen is stored food.
  • ✓Coenocytic = aseptate, continuous multinucleate cytoplasm.
  • ✓Ascospores are endogenous in asci; basidiospores are external on basidia.
  • ✓Penicillium is an ascomycete used in cheese ripening.
