Read the Anther-to-Pollen Path

Trace one sequence to solve these questions: the anther wall supports pollen development, pollen mother cells undergo meiosis, tetrads separate, and the male gametophyte matures.

Assign the anther wall jobs

A microsporangium is surrounded by epidermis, endothecium, middle layers and the innermost tapetum. Tapetum nourishes developing pollen. Fibrous thickenings in the endothecium help the anther open at dehiscence. Do not swap the nutritive and opening roles.

Follow meiosis into a tetrad

A diploid pollen mother cell in the sporogenous tissue undergoes meiosis. This microsporogenesis produces four haploid microspores that initially stay together as a tetrad. In a figure, a cluster of four cells within one boundary is a tetrad; once they separate, each is a free microspore.

Identify the maturing pollen grain

A microspore develops into a pollen grain, the haploid male gametophyte formed in the anther. In a two-celled pollen grain, the larger vegetative cell surrounds the smaller generative cell. The generative cell has dense cytoplasm and divides mitotically to form the two male gametes. Pollen carries the male lineage; it is not the female gametophyte.

Use stage and location to reject distractors

Anther/microsporangium names the site, pollen mother cell names the meiotic precursor, tetrad names four products still together, and pollen grain names the male gametophyte. Tapetum is a supporting layer, not the cell that undergoes meiosis. Match each option to a stage and a location before deciding.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Tapetum = innermost nutritive layer; endothecium = fibrous layer helping dehiscence.
  • ✓Diploid pollen mother cell → meiosis → four haploid microspores in a tetrad.
  • ✓A free microspore is one separated product; a tetrad is four still grouped.
  • ✓Pollen grain = haploid male gametophyte produced in anther microsporangia.
  • ✓Generative cell has dense cytoplasm and divides mitotically into male gametes.
OlympIQ trap

Do not call the tapetum the meiotic cell or mistake a four-celled tetrad image for one mature pollen grain. First identify whether the question asks for wall layer, precursor cell, meiotic product or male gametophyte.
