Read Animal Energetics: Heat, Insulation and Fuel
Read animal energetics by asking what raises heat production, what limits heat loss, and whether fuel oxidation is becoming more efficient or simply higher.
Living-system questions are solved by matching a structure or organism to its function, process and stated condition.
Predict energy expenditure from heat balance
Endotherms spend energy to maintain body temperature. A smaller endotherm has more surface area relative to mass and loses heat faster than a larger one; cold water raises the heat-loss challenge further. This is why the cold-water penguin can exceed the listed ectotherms and a larger human in both total and mass-specific daily expenditure.
Rank insulation by trapped air
Muscle, with high water content, conducts heat relatively well. Fat insulates better, and dry fur is best because it traps still air. The correct increasing order of insulation is muscle, fat, dry fur. Wet fur is much less effective because water replaces the insulating air spaces.
Read fuel oxidation separately from ATP
If glucose oxidation rises much more than the measured ATP level, the graph signals higher energy expenditure rather than a proportional gain in useful captured ATP. In the source question, that pattern supports increased body respiration and weight reduction. It is an exam interpretation, not health or drug-use advice.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Endothermy, cold exposure and high surface area-to-volume ratio raise heat-production cost.
- ✓Insulation increases: muscle < fat < dry fur.
- ✓More fuel oxidation does not automatically mean proportionally more captured ATP.
Do not equate a high metabolic rate with high ATP stored at one instant. Separate heat loss, fuel oxidation and usable ATP output.
