Family gel bands track marker alleles. A homozygote for one allele shows the band pattern produced by that restriction-site arrangement, while the other homozygote shows the alternative pattern. A heterozygous carrier contains fragments from both alleles and therefore shows the combined set of bands. From the restriction map, unaffected, affected and carrier profiles contain 2, 1 and 3 bands, respectively.
