Combine light and humidity responses

Woodlice avoid light and seek humidity most strongly by day. At night their humidity response weakens while negative phototaxis remains, so they can explore drier areas more readily. Under severe dryness, a weak positive phototaxis can reflect a competing escape response. Taken together, the responses reduce dehydration and exposure to predators. Choose A and D.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Negative phototaxis and positive hygrotaxis can jointly reduce dehydration and predation risk.
  • ✓The strength of a taxis can change with time and water stress.
OlympIQ trap

Do not treat a response as fixed. Compare its direction and strength under every stated condition.
