Cecal Fermentation

Reingestion recovers microbial nutrients. Rabbits are hindgut/caecal fermenters. Microbes digest fibre in the caecum and produce nutrient-rich soft pellets called cecotropes, which are re-ingested, often at night, allowing recovery of microbial protein and vitamins. This is the most specific explanation.

Comparative Gut Anatomy

Cecum and rumen distinguish feeding strategies. Carnivores generally have a relatively short intestine and a small caecum. Non-ruminant herbivores such as rabbits have a large caecum for microbial fermentation. Insectivores generally have a simple and relatively short gut, while ruminants have a four-chambered stomach and long intestines.

Hence P = carnivore, Q= non-ruminant herbivore, R= insectivore, S= ruminant herbivore

Digestive Enzymes

Chitinase clearance pattern identifies diet adaptation. Crab shell is rich in chitin. Clear zones indicate chitin-digesting activity. In the diagram, activity is strongest in the hindgut/colon region rather than mainly in stomach or small intestine. That pattern is characteristic of an animal relying strongly on microbial fermentation in the hindgut, i.e. a hindgut fermenter.
