Start with citrate formation

Acetyl-CoA (two carbons) condenses with oxaloacetate (four carbons) to form citrate. Oxaloacetate is regenerated by the end of a turn.

Count products per turn

Each acetyl-CoA produces two CO₂, three NADH, one FADH₂ and one GTP/ATP equivalent. NADH and FADH₂ must be reoxidised for the cycle to continue.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Acetyl-CoA + oxaloacetate → citrate.
  • ✓Two decarboxylations per turn.
  • ✓Regenerate oxaloacetate and oxidised coenzymes.
OlympIQ trap

Do not confuse regeneration of oxaloacetate with net consumption of it.
