Follow the reflex
As the bladder fills, stretch receptors signal the CNS. The micturition reflex contracts the detrusor muscle and relaxes the outlet sphincters to release urine.
Separate the sphincters
The internal urethral sphincter is smooth muscle and involuntary; the external urethral sphincter is skeletal muscle and can be controlled voluntarily.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Stretch → reflex → detrusor contraction.
- ✓Internal sphincter involuntary; external sphincter voluntary.
OlympIQ trap
Urine release requires bladder-wall contraction, not relaxation.
