Core idea

Salinity lowers the water potential around roots and can cause ion toxicity. Plants limit damage by excluding or compartmentalising excess Na⁺ and accumulating compatible osmolytes such as proline or glycine betaine. These osmoprotectants stabilise proteins and membranes without disrupting normal metabolism; simply increasing sodium uptake is not a tolerance strategy.

Osmoprotectants stabilise macromolecules

Compatible osmolytes such as proline and glycine betaine protect proteins and membranes and help maintain water balance under salt stress.
