Count ATP accurately

Two ATP are invested and four are formed by substrate-level phosphorylation, for a net gain of two ATP per glucose. NAD⁺ is reduced during PGAL oxidation; water is released during conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to PEP.

Track the common route

Fructose enters at fructose-6-phosphate and follows the shared downstream glycolytic steps. Mature red blood cells depend on glycolysis for ATP.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Ten enzyme-catalysed steps; no CO₂ release.
  • ✓Gross ATP = 4; net ATP = 2 per glucose.
  • ✓Two pyruvate form from one glucose.
OlympIQ trap

Distinguish gross ATP formed from net ATP after the investment phase.
