Read the Real Rule for Significant Zeros
Significant-figure rules are about which digits carry real precision — trailing zeros after a decimal point count, trailing zeros in a plain whole number usually don't.
Measurements & Significant Figures is the central idea in this question pattern. Identify the condition in the stem before applying the method below.
Counting significant zeros correctly
A zero is significant when it sits between two nonzero digits, or when it's a trailing zero after an explicit decimal point. A trailing zero in a plain whole number with no decimal point is ambiguous and, by default convention, not counted as significant.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Zeros between nonzero digits are always significant.
- ✓Trailing zeros after a decimal point are significant.
- ✓Trailing zeros in a whole number with no decimal point are ambiguous by default.
Don't apply one blanket rule for all zeros — the zero's position relative to the decimal point and the other digits is what decides significance.
