Read What Frequency Controls and What Intensity Controls
The photoelectric effect splits cleanly into two independent knobs — frequency controls whether electrons are ejected at all and their kinetic energy, intensity controls only how many electrons come out per second (the current).
Chemistry questions first require the material, particles or reaction condition to be identified before a formula or rule is selected.
Separate the nucleus from the electron shell
Nucleus identifies the element · outer shell sets valency
Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus; electrons occupy shells. Atomic number identifies the element, while valency concerns outer-shell electrons.
Frequency vs intensity — different jobs entirely
Photoelectric current increases with the intensity of incident radiation (more photons per second, above threshold, means more ejected electrons per second) — it does not depend on frequency once the frequency is already above the threshold. Kinetic energy of the ejected electrons depends on frequency, not intensity.
Blackbody radiation shifts toward shorter wavelength as temperature rises
As temperature increases, the wavelength of maximum intensity shifts toward the higher-energy (shorter-wavelength) end of the spectrum, and the total energy density increases — both directions matter, since a question can flip either one to test the same graph.
One property stays constant across the whole electromagnetic spectrum
Every region of the electromagnetic spectrum — radio through γ — travels at the same speed in vacuum. Energy, frequency and wavelength all vary systematically across the spectrum; only the speed of propagation stays fixed.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Photoelectric current (electrons per second) tracks intensity; kinetic energy of ejected electrons tracks frequency — don't swap these.
- ✓Higher blackbody temperature shifts peak wavelength shorter AND increases total energy density — both change together.
- ✓Every region of the EM spectrum travels at the same speed in vacuum; energy, frequency and wavelength all vary.
Don't let intensity and frequency answer each other's questions — intensity governs how many photoelectrons are ejected, frequency governs whether ejection happens at all and how energetic each electron is.
