Classify the gynoecium

A superior ovary is above the attachment of other floral parts; an inferior ovary is below them. Asteraceae typically has an inferior ovary, while potato and mustard have superior ovaries. Apocarpous carpels are free; syncarpous carpels are fused.

Connect fruit and formula

A drupe such as mango has a fleshy mesocarp and stony endocarp. Floral formulas encode symmetry, number and fusion conventions, but a floral diagram often communicates spatial arrangement more directly.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Sunflower ovary: inferior.
  • ✓Mango drupe: fleshy mesocarp + stony endocarp.
  • ✓Formula is concise, not a complete spatial diagram.
OlympIQ trap

Ovary position describes its relation to other whorls, not whether the fruit is edible.
