Read Ozonolysis Products Backward to Rebuild the Alkene
Ozonolysis cleaves a C=C double bond and replaces it with two C=O groups — so working out the alkene from its ozonolysis products (or vice versa) is really just running this one bond-replacement rule forward or backward.
Ozonolysis and Structure Determination is the central idea in this question pattern. Identify the condition in the stem before applying the method below.
Reading the alkene backward from carbonyl products
Each carbon that was part of the double bond becomes a carbonyl carbon in the product — an alkene giving ethanal and pentan-3-one on ozonolysis must have had one =CH-CH3 end (becomes ethanal) and one =C(C2H5)2 end (becomes pentan-3-one), joined together: this rebuilds to 3-ethylpent-2-ene. Practice reconstructing the full alkene skeleton by joining the two carbonyl-bearing carbons back into one double bond.
Cyclic alkenes open into a single dicarbonyl chain
Ozonolysis of a CYCLIC alkene doesn't split it into two separate fragments — it opens the ring, giving ONE open-chain product with a carbonyl at each end (a diketone, ketoaldehyde, or diacid after oxidative workup, depending on substitution). This is why cyclopentene-type substrates give a single dicarbonyl product, not two.
Oxidative workup (H2O2) takes carbonyls further to diacids or ketoacids
Ozonolysis followed by oxidative workup (H2O2, not the milder Zn/H2O reductive workup) oxidises any resulting aldehyde carbon further to a carboxylic acid, while a ketone carbon stays a ketone — this is why the SAME alkene can give a diacid (both ends were originally =CH-, becoming -COOH) or a ketoacid (one end was more substituted, giving a ketone that resists further oxidation) depending on its substitution pattern.
Aromatic ring ozonolysis needs three double bonds accounted for
Ozonolysis of an aromatic ring like o-xylene cleaves all three ring double bonds (since benzene's aromaticity is disrupted under ozonolysis conditions), giving a mixture of dicarbonyl fragments from each of the three cleaved positions — track all three double bonds' worth of cleavage, not just one, when the substrate is aromatic.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Ozonolysis replaces C=C with two C=O groups — reconstruct the alkene by joining the two product carbonyls back at the position where the double bond was.
- ✓A cyclic alkene opens into ONE dicarbonyl chain on ozonolysis, not two separate fragments.
- ✓Oxidative workup (H2O2) pushes any resulting aldehyde on to a carboxylic acid; a resulting ketone is unaffected — this is how the same alkene type can give a diacid or a ketoacid depending on substitution.
- ✓Ozonolysis of an aromatic ring cleaves all three ring double bonds, not just one.
Don't assume oxidative (H2O2) and reductive (Zn/H2O) ozonolysis workups give the same products — oxidative workup pushes any aldehyde product on to a carboxylic acid, while reductive workup stops at the aldehyde.
