Read the Drivers of Biodiversity Loss
Habitat loss, overexploitation, alien species and co-extinction drive biodiversity decline; land-use practices shape these pressures.
Biodiversity Loss and Deforestation is the central idea in this question pattern. Identify the condition in the stem before applying the method below.
Match driver to example
Amazon clearing is habitat loss; water hyacinth invasion is an alien-species impact; passenger-pigeon decline is linked to overexploitation; and specialised plant–pollinator loss can cause co-extinction. Eichhornia, Parthenium and Lantana are invasive alien plants in India; Ficus is not in this list.
Understand land-use effects
Deforestation removes habitat, increases erosion and disrupts hydrological cycles; it also tends to increase atmospheric CO₂ rather than reduce it. Jhum cultivation traditionally clears vegetation, burns it and uses ash; replanting the same former forest species is not one of its defining steps.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Amazon clearing → habitat loss.
- ✓Water hyacinth → invasive alien.
- ✓Passenger pigeon → overexploitation.
- ✓Deforestation raises CO₂ and disrupts water/soil systems.
- ✓Jhum: clear, burn, use ash.
Match each example to its main driver; don’t confuse habitat loss with invasive-species impact.
