Read Antibodies by Class and Function
Use each antibody question to connect a molecule with its class, location or job.
Living-system questions are solved by matching a structure or organism to its function, process and stated condition.
Know the high-yield classes
IgM is prominent first in a primary response and its pentameric form agglutinates effectively. IgG is abundant and can cross the placenta; it is prominent in the secondary response. IgE is associated with allergic responses, while IgD can serve as a B-cell surface receptor.
Read structure and function matches
An antibody is a glycoprotein. Its variable ends contain paratopes that bind antigen. Interleukins are cytokines. Opsonization coats a target in a way that helps phagocytes recognise and engulf it.
Antibody classes
Immunoglobulin class (such as IgG, IgM or IgA) is determined by the constant region of the heavy chain, not the light chain or hinge region.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓IgM: early primary response; pentamer.
- ✓IgG: abundant, crosses placenta, strong secondary response.
- ✓IgE: allergy; IgD: B-cell receptor.
- ✓Paratope binds antigen; opsonization promotes phagocytosis.
Do not confuse the antibody-mediated humoral response with T-cell-mediated CMI.
