Memorise diagnostic combinations

Malvaceae: epicalyx, twisted petals, monadelphous stamens and superior ovary. Brassicaceae: four petals, six tetradynamous stamens, bicarpellary superior ovary and siliqua. Liliaceae: trimerous flower, epiphyllous stamens and undifferentiated perianth. Poaceae: lodicules, spikelets and caryopsis.

Use contrasts, not one isolated trait

Fabaceae is often zygomorphic and vexillary, with a persistent calyx and non-endospermic seeds. Solanaceae typically has actinomorphic flowers, epipetalous stamens and axile placentation. Family matching questions combine several of these clues.

Match useful plants to their products

Tobacco is a fumigatory plant; gram is a pulse; onion is a vegetable; groundnut yields edible oil; tulip is ornamental.

Read a grass floral diagram

The linked floral diagram has the characteristic reduced grass-flower plan: bracts enclosing the flower, a single ovary, and three stamens. It represents Poaceae; maize and rice are both Poaceae examples. Do not match the diagram to broad petalled families such as Malvaceae or Brassicaceae.

  • ✓Malvaceae: epicalyx + monadelphous stamens.
  • ✓Brassicaceae: tetradynamous + siliqua.
  • ✓Liliaceae: trimerous + epiphyllous.
  • ✓Poaceae: lodicules + caryopsis.
  • ✓Tobacco—fumigatory; gram—pulse; onion—vegetable; groundnut—oil; tulip—ornamental.
OlympIQ trap
