Read How Filtration Pressure Makes Filtrate

Filtration depends on pressure across a selective barrier; the same pressure changes explain GFR calculations and arteriole effects.

Know this first

Glomerular Filtration is the central idea in this question pattern. Identify the condition in the stem before applying the method below.

Follow the filtration barrier

Blood is filtered through capillary endothelium, basement membrane and podocyte epithelium into Bowman’s capsule. Cells and most proteins are retained, leaving protein-free filtrate.

Balance the pressures

NFP=GHP−(BCOP+CHP)NFP = GHP - (BCOP + CHP)

Afferent dilation raises glomerular hydrostatic pressure and GFR. GFR equals renal plasma flow multiplied by filtration fraction: 650 × 0.20 = 130 mL/min. Renal blood flow is about 1.1–1.2 L/min, not the same as GFR.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Endothelium → basement membrane → podocyte epithelium.
  • ✓NFP = GHP − (BCOP + CHP).
  • ✓GFR = renal plasma flow × filtration fraction.
  • ✓RBF ≠ GFR.

Do not say the entire circulating blood volume is filtered every minute.
