Follow energy, not just gases

Respiration releases energy through enzyme-controlled steps. Carbohydrates are commonly preferred fuels; other substrates can also enter. ATP captures part of the released energy.

Separate respiration from combustion

Both can use oxygen and release energy, but cellular respiration is enzyme-controlled, occurs in cells and conserves usable energy as ATP. Combustion is rapid and uncontrolled and does not make ATP.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Respiration is stepwise and cellular.
  • ✓Carbohydrates are preferred, not exclusive, fuels.
  • ✓Combustion releases energy but does not conserve it as ATP.
OlympIQ trap

Do not treat similar end products as proof that respiration and combustion are the same process.
