Centres and receptors
The medullary respiratory rhythm centre generates the basic rhythm. The pontine pneumotaxic centre moderates inspiration. Peripheral chemoreceptors lie in carotid and aortic bodies; central chemosensitivity responds mainly to CO2/H+ changes.
Respond to altitude
At altitude, lower atmospheric PO2 rapidly stimulates ventilation and cardiovascular responses that improve oxygen uptake and delivery.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Medulla: primary rhythm generation.
- ✓Pons: moderates inspiration and tidal volume.
- ✓Carotid/aortic bodies: peripheral chemoreceptors.
- ✓Altitude: ventilation and heart rate rise.
OlympIQ trap
The central chemosensitive area is not primarily an oxygen sensor.
