Read the two leaf surfaces

A typical dicot leaf is dorsiventral: palisade mesophyll, with many chloroplasts, lies nearer the upper (adaxial) surface; spongy mesophyll, with fewer chloroplasts and more air spaces, lies nearer the lower (abaxial) surface. A typical monocot leaf is isobilateral because its two surfaces are more alike.

Locate chloroplasts precisely

Chloroplasts occur in mesophyll cells, in guard cells, and in the bundle sheath cells of C4 plants such as maize. Ordinary epidermal cells generally lack chloroplasts. Check which cell type an option actually names.

Separate leaf facts from stem facts

Anatomy statement questions can combine organs. The thick-walled bundle sheath statement concerns a dicot leaf; the cavity associated with a monocot stem is the protoxylem lacuna, not a metaxylem cavity. Judge the two statements independently.

Check cuticle and veins

In a typical dicot leaf, the upper surface is more exposed and may have a thicker cuticle; do not reverse the surfaces automatically. Monocot leaves often have parallel veins of similar size apart from the main vein.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Is the question about dicot or monocot leaf symmetry?
  • ✓Which side contains palisade and which contains spongy mesophyll?
  • ✓Is the named cell a guard, mesophyll, bundle sheath, or ordinary epidermal cell?
  • ✓Does a paired statement switch from leaf anatomy to stem xylem?
  • ✓Are cuticle thickness and vein size assigned to the correct surface or leaf type?
Anatomy trap

Do not use a correct leaf fact to validate a separate stem statement. Check each tissue and organ named in the option.
