Protect crops from pests

Meloidogyne causes root-knot disease. Agrobacterium causes crown gall, often around wounded stem tissue. Bt Cry proteins damage susceptible insect larval gut cells.

Silence a target gene

In RNA interference, a target-specific sequence is introduced; transformed plant cells produce double-stranded RNA. RISC/Argonaute uses a guide strand to recognise and silence matching nematode mRNA.

Enrich a crop

Golden Rice uses genes from daffodil and Erwinia to produce β-carotene, a vitamin-A precursor, in the grain.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Root-knot → Meloidogyne; crown gall → Agrobacterium.
  • ✓Bt Cry protein → insect gut damage.
  • ✓RNAi: target gene → dsRNA → RISC → silencing.
  • ✓Golden Rice → β-carotene from daffodil/Erwinia genes.
OlympIQ trap

Do not confuse the crop’s target pest with the bacterium used as a transformation vector.
