Understand the pressure difference

Systolic pressure rises when the ventricle forces blood into arteries. Diastolic pressure is measured during relaxation. A pulse is palpated in an artery, not a vein; 120/80 mmHg is the conventional normal value in this sample.

Read artery structure

The tunica media is the muscular, elastic middle layer that helps an artery withstand and regulate pressure.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Systole → blood forced into arteries.
  • ✓Pulse is arterial.
  • ✓Tunica media → smooth muscle and elastic tissue.
OlympIQ trap

Arteries are identified by flow direction, but a palpable pulse is an arterial pressure wave.
