Trace Blood from Body to Heart
Follow blood through the right heart, lungs, left heart and systemic organs; identify special vessel routes separately.
Blood Flow and Portal Systems is the central idea in this question pattern. Identify the condition in the stem before applying the method below.
Trace the pulmonary loop
The right ventricle sends blood through pulmonary arteries to the lungs. Pulmonary veins return oxygenated blood to the left atrium, then the left ventricle pumps it to systemic tissues. The venae cavae return deoxygenated blood from the body to the right atrium.
Know pressure and filling
Pulmonary-artery pressure exceeds pulmonary-vein pressure. Atria fill while relaxed; ventricular relaxation supports filling. A portal system has two capillary beds in sequence before blood returns to the heart.
Single circulation in fishes
Keep the order of chambers and gas-exchange surface explicit when comparing vertebrate circulations.
Use a cross-connection to preserve flow
When neck rotation compresses one jugular vein, a left–right jugular anastomosis provides an alternate venous route. Identify the affected side of circulation first: this is a jugular, not carotid, connection. Choose C.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓RV → pulmonary artery → lungs → pulmonary veins → LA → LV.
- ✓Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood; pulmonary vein oxygenated.
- ✓Portal system: capillary bed → vein → second capillary bed.
- ✓Pulmonary artery pressure > pulmonary vein pressure.
- ✓A jugular anastomosis can preserve venous drainage during neck rotation.
Arteries are defined by carrying blood away from the heart, not by oxygen content.
