Read the Human Lineage by Trait and Time
Human evolution is a branching history. Use the lineage sequence, anatomy, fossils and inheritance pattern as separate clues.
Living-system questions are solved by matching a structure or organism to its function, process and stated condition.
Trace the mammalian lineage
Human evolution is not a simple ladder of progress and is not the classic adaptive radiation pattern into many ecological niches.
Compare hominid evidence carefully
Textbook comparisons use cranial capacity and traits such as skull shape, tool use, bipedalism and social behaviour. Neanderthals are associated with western Eurasia and later Pleistocene populations; Dryopithecus is not the hominid that buried the dead with grave goods.
Follow uniparental markers
Mitochondrial DNA is usually inherited maternally and the Y chromosome paternally. Their limited recombination makes them useful for tracing particular ancestry lines, though neither tells the whole population history.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Synapsids → pelycosaurs → therapsids → mammals.
- ✓Human evolution is branching, not a progress ladder.
- ✓mtDNA and Y trace different uniparental lines.
- ✓Use each fossil/anatomical trait in its stated textbook context.
Cranial capacity is only one comparison; never treat human evolution as a straight sequence of modern species.
