Read Parallel-Plate Capacitors: Field, Charge and Dielectrics

For a parallel-plate capacitor, separate the geometry from the constraint. First identify whether the voltage, charge, field limit, dielectric, or plate area is fixed. Then use the one relation that connects those quantities.

Separate charge, current and the path between them

Charge
Path
Current

Charge is a property · current needs a conducting path

Charge is a property; current needs a conducting path. Decide first whether the question concerns charging, resistance, current or earthing.

Core relations

For large plates,
C = ε A/d and E = V/d

With a dielectric fully filling the gap, ε becomes k ε₀. For isolated plates with unequal charges, the field between them comes from superposition; do not assume the charges must be +Q and -Q.

Sizing under a field limit

If breakdown is the limit, impose
E = V/d <= E_max first

Combine d >= V/E_max with C = k ε₀ A/d. The smallest allowed plate area is obtained at the smallest allowed separation.

Unequal charge trap

The potential difference depends on the field between the two plates, not on their total charge. Build it from the two sheet fields and only then multiply by d.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Write the constraint before substituting numbers.
  • ✓Check whether the dielectric fills the entire gap.
  • ✓For plate charges, use superposition rather than the usual capacitor shortcut.
OlympIQ trap

Using C = Q/V blindly when the two plates do not carry equal and opposite charge gives the wrong potential difference.
