Know this first

Momentum–Position Curves from Potential Energy is the central idea in this question pattern. Identify the condition in the stem before applying the method below.

Start with the physical model

Read the configuration once, state the conserved quantity or governing law, and mark any changing geometry, sign convention or limiting condition.

Build the relation

For total energy E in one dimension, p(x)=±sqrt[2m(E-V(x))].

Momentum is zero at classical turning points where
V = E and has largest magnitude where V is minimum

The p-x curve is symmetric about the x-axis because both signs of p are possible. Applying these features to the plotted V(x), the only matching graph is Fig. a.

Check before selecting

Check units, sign and one limiting case. A valid result must still fit the original geometry and stated constraint.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Name the governing law before using a formula.
  • ✓Keep the stated geometry and direction information explicit.
  • ✓Use one unit or limiting-case check.
OlympIQ trap

At a turning point p is zero; it is not where the potential has zero slope.
