Magnetic effects have two poles and a direction

North
Field
South

Like poles repel · unlike poles attract

Like poles repel and unlike poles attract. Keep the field direction and the material’s magnetic property separate.

Start with the physical model

Read the configuration once, state the conserved quantity or governing law, and mark any changing geometry, sign convention or limiting condition.

Build the relation

A cylindrical surface carrying total axial current i uniformly around its circumference has surface current density
K=i/(2πR)K = i/(2\pi R)
The magnetic pressure
p=B2/(2µ0)=µ0K2/2p = B2/(2µ0) = µ0K2/2
With i = 2 A and R=0.50 m, K=2/π A m-1, giving p≈2.55×10-7 N m-2

Check before selecting

Check units, sign and one limiting case. A valid result must still fit the original geometry and stated constraint.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Name the governing law before using a formula.
  • ✓Keep the stated geometry and direction information explicit.
  • ✓Use one unit or limiting-case check.
OlympIQ trap

Do not insert total current directly into B-squared/(2 μ₀); first find the surface current density.
