Read a Semi-Infinite Line Charge by Resolving Components

A semi-infinite line has less symmetry than an infinite line, so its field is not purely perpendicular to the line. Resolve the contribution from a small element before integrating.

Separate charge, current and the path between them

Current

Charge is a property · current needs a conducting path

Charge is a property; current needs a conducting path. Decide first whether the question concerns charging, resistance, current or earthing.

Choose one source element

Set dq = λ dx and write dE = (1/4 π ε₀) dq/r²

Resolve dE along convenient coordinate axes at the observation point.

Use symmetry carefully

For an infinite line, axial components cancel. For a semi-infinite line they do not, so expect both parallel and perpendicular components.

Check limits

If the missing half of the line were restored, the axial components would cancel and the result should approach the familiar infinite-line field.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Write dq = λ dx.
  • ✓Resolve before integrating.
  • ✓Test against the infinite-line limit.
OlympIQ trap

Using the infinite-line result directly loses the component along the line and gives the wrong direction.
