Know this first

Electricity questions depend on identifying charge, a conducting path and the condition that controls current or magnetic effect.

Start with the physical model

Read the configuration once, state the conserved quantity or governing law, and mark any changing geometry, sign convention or limiting condition.

Build the relation

At a point x between the charges, taking +x to the right, E(x)=kQ/x2 - kQ/(L-x)2.

Asx→0+,E→+∞;As x\rightarrow 0+, E\rightarrow +∞;
atx=L/2,E=0;at x = L/2, E=0;
and as x→L-, E→-∞.

The function decreases continuously through zero at the midpoint. Therefore the correct qualitative plot is Fig. d.

Check before selecting

Check units, sign and one limiting case. A valid result must still fit the original geometry and stated constraint.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Name the governing law before using a formula.
  • ✓Keep the stated geometry and direction information explicit.
  • ✓Use one unit or limiting-case check.

Potential is symmetric here, but the electric field changes sign at the midpoint.
