Read Projectile Paths: Use the Trajectory Equation

For a projectile near a curved obstacle or at a stated point, eliminate time first. The trajectory y(x) reveals the required geometric condition directly.

Know this first

Motion and force questions become simpler when direction, starting condition, time and the acting forces are marked first.

Start with the condition

Resolve launch speed into horizontal and vertical components, then
y = x tan θ - g x²/(2 u² cos squared θ)

Build the governing relation

For clearance, compare the projectile height with the obstacle height at the same horizontal coordinate. For velocity direction, combine vₓ and vᵧ at that point.

Finish with a physical check

Check the limiting case before selecting an option: remove the special feature in the diagram or make the relevant parameter very large or very small. The result should reduce to a familiar relation.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓State the physical condition before choosing a formula.
  • ✓Keep direction, sign and constraint information explicit.
  • ✓Test one limiting case before committing to an option.
OlympIQ trap

A range formula only applies when launch and landing heights match; it cannot enforce clearance of an intermediate obstacle.
