Know this first

Two-Dimensional Collision Momentum is the central idea in this question pattern. Identify the condition in the stem before applying the method below.

Start with the physical model

Read the configuration once, state the conserved quantity or governing law, and mark any changing geometry, sign convention or limiting condition.

Build the relation

For the 2M body, sin
θ=3/5;\theta = 3/5;

its transverse momentum magnitude is 2Mv(3/5)=6Mv/5.

For the M body, speed is 3v/2 and sin
φ = 4/5, so its transverse momentum magnitude is also M(3v/2)(4/5)=6Mv/5, in the opposite direction

Hence the total y-momentum is zero. With no external force, the centre of mass therefore moves along the x-axis before and after collision.

Check before selecting

Check units, sign and one limiting case. A valid result must still fit the original geometry and stated constraint.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Name the governing law before using a formula.
  • ✓Keep the stated geometry and direction information explicit.
  • ✓Use one unit or limiting-case check.
OlympIQ trap

Momentum conservation is vector conservation—matching speed data alone is not enough.
