Read Perpendicular Charged Sheets Through Field Vectors

For each infinite sheet, the electric-field magnitude is sigma/(2 ε₀) on either side. The challenge is direction: decide it region by region, then add vectors.

Separate charge, current and the path between them

Current

Charge is a property · current needs a conducting path

Charge is a property; current needs a conducting path. Decide first whether the question concerns charging, resistance, current or earthing.

Direction rule

A positive sheet pushes the field away from itself; a negative sheet pulls the field toward itself. Draw the normal direction separately for every sheet.

Use coordinates

For perpendicular sheets, one contribution lies along one coordinate axis and the other along another. The net field is a vector sum, not a scalar addition.

Region independence

The magnitude from an ideal infinite sheet does not change with distance. Only its direction changes when you cross the sheet.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Draw the field from each sheet first.
  • ✓Set the sign from the point's side of each plane.
  • ✓Add x, y and z components.
OlympIQ trap

Do not use sigma/ε₀ for one isolated sheet; that magnitude belongs to the field between two oppositely charged parallel sheets.
