Know this first

Chemistry questions first require the material, particles or reaction condition to be identified before a formula or rule is selected.

Build the indicator table

Acid: blue litmus → red, methyl orange → red and China rose → magenta.
Base: red litmus → blue, methyl orange → yellow and China rose → green.

A neutral solution leaves the relevant indicator unchanged.

Separate strength from nature

Organic acids such as acetic, formic and citric acid are weak acids, but weak does not mean neutral. Use the question’s observation rather than the source name alone.

Test every sample independently

For a table, read one row at a time and assign its nature. Do not infer that two unknown liquids must be opposite merely because they appear in the same experiment.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Translate each colour change into acid, base or neutral.
  • ✓Check whether the question asks about nature or acid strength.
  • ✓Eliminate an option as soon as one indicator observation disagrees.
OlympIQ trap

Turmeric stays yellow in an acid or neutral liquid; it turns reddish-brown in a base. Do not use one indicator rule for another indicator.
