Keep properties distinct

Solubility means dissolving in a liquid; transparency means letting light through; conductivity means allowing heat or electric current to pass; malleability means being hammered into sheets.

Use a process clue

If a substance floats or sinks, compare density with the liquid. If two liquids mix uniformly, they are miscible; if not, they form separate layers.

OlympIQ exam lens

  • ✓Write the observed property before naming a material.
  • ✓Separate electrical and thermal conductivity.
  • ✓Use density for floating, not mass alone.
OlympIQ trap

Waterproof does not mean it cannot conduct electricity, and a conductor need not be transparent.
