Use the organ clues
Roots include carrot, radish and beetroot. Stems include potato, ginger and sugarcane. Leaves include spinach and cabbage. Seeds include peas, gram and cereals.
Watch for modified parts
Potato is a modified stem with buds (‘eyes’), not a root. Onion is a bulb with fleshy leaves around a short stem.
OlympIQ exam lens
- ✓Name the part used for food.
- ✓Check for buds or nodes to recognise a stem.
- ✓Do not classify by where the plant grows.
OlympIQ trap
A part growing underground is not automatically a root—potato is the classic counterexample.
